Rugby

Nico Malan High School is well-known throughout the Eastern Cape for its hard-running, physical, and exciting brand of rugby. Our rugby philosophy is founded on the core values of integrity, passion, discipline, and respect, with a strong belief that good people make good players.

Teams and Season

Our thirteen rugby teams compete at the highest level of EP Schools rugby during the winter season from March to August. Across the country, the Nico Malan light blue jersey is widely recognised and respected.

Coaching

We have a dynamic coaching group that is passionate about the sport. Our coaching staff includes former professional rugby players, contributing valuable experience, skill development, and rugby knowledge.

Tours and Festivals

Every year, Nico Malan teams tour across South Africa and participate in major tournaments and rugby festivals, including:

  • Noord-Suid
  • Jean de Villiers Festival (Paarl Gymnasium)
  • Frans Malherbe Festival (Paarl Boys’ High)
  • Grey College Rugby Festival

Player Achievements

Nico Malan is extremely proud of the recent SA Schools players produced, as well as the many provincial players who have gone on to secure contracts after school. They continue to make the blue jersey proud.

Netball

Hoërskool Nico Malan boasts a strong and well-established netball programme supported by highly qualified coaching staff.

Coaching and Development

All our coaches hold Netball South Africa (NSA) Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications and are committed to continuous professional development. Coaches regularly attend coaching and umpiring courses to remain up to date with the latest rules, techniques, and best practices.

At Nico Malan, we focus on the holistic development of each player by investing in athletic performance, personal growth, and emotional development, while fostering a lifelong passion for netball.

Teams and Structure

The netball programme consists of 14 teams across four age groups, ensuring structured development and competitive opportunities for all players.

Participation and Achievements

Our netball players participate in various district and provincial tournaments and trials throughout the year. We are proud that Nico Malan learners represent the Eastern Cape at national level every year.

Competitive Opportunities

All A-teams attend high-level tournaments during the March school holidays, where they compete against some of the top netball schools in South Africa.

In addition, Nico Malan hosts an annual Fast Five Netball Tournament at the end of August, which has become a highlight on our sporting calendar.

Hokkie

Hoërskool Nico Malan bied beide dogters- en seunshokkie aan.

By dogtershokkie is daar deurgaans ’n A- en B-span vir elke ouderdomsgroep. Afhangend van getalle word daar ook voorsiening gemaak vir ’n C-span indien nodig.

In 2025 het Nico Malan weer met seunshokkie begin, en beskik ons tans oor ’n junior en senior seunsontwikkelingspan.

Hokkie-oefeninge vind plaas soos aangedui op die jaarprogram. Nico Malan se hokkie vorm deel van die Oostelike Provinsie Hokkieliggaam, en ons missie is om spanwerk, sportmanskap en dissipline te bevorder. Ons glo dat leerders die sport moet geniet en dat die vaardighede en waardes wat hulle by Nico Malan Hokkie aanleer, ook in hul lewens toegepas kan word.

Cricket is a summer sport played during two main seasons:

Our Focus

Cross Country

Cross Country takes place during the winter season from May to August.

Practices

Training sessions are held as stipulated in the official school year programme.

Competitions

Our athletes participate in a variety of events, including:

  • The annual Framesby 2 km Relay
  • District meetings
  • Provincial meetings

Our Goal

The primary aim of Cross Country is to ensure that athletes maintain and build their fitness during the winter months in preparation for the summer athletics season.

Golf

Golf is played throughout the year at various golf courses across the Eastern Province.

Practices

Practice sessions take place on:

  • Fridays

League Matches

League matches are played on Mondays.

Teams and Participation

Nico Malan High School fields two league teams, consisting of four players per team.

We are extremely proud of the achievements of our golfers over the years in the Eastern Province League, and the strong tradition of excellence that has been established within the sport.

Tournaments

In addition to league participation, Nico Malan also takes part in the prestigious Cape Schools Golf Tournament, where the top golf schools in the Cape compete against one another.

Tennis

Nico Malan Tennis streef reeds die afgelope 20 jaar daarna om as een van die top tennisskole in die Oos-Kaap erken te word. Ons neem jaarliks deel aan die Nelson Mandelabaai-skoleliga, waar ons drie seunspanne en drie meisiespanne in Liga 1, 2 en 3 inskryf.

Ons toer jaarliks na verskeie bestemmings — nie net binne die Oos-Kaap nie, maar ook regoor Suid-Afrika — om waardevolle blootstelling en mededingende ervaring aan ons spelers te bied.

Op provinsiale vlak presteer Nico Malan Tennis konsekwent uitstekend en spog ons met talle OP-IPT spelers, asook leerders wat die OP-Synergyspan verteenwoordig.

Met toegewyde tennisafrigters, ondersteunende ouers, afrigters uit die omliggende gemeenskappe en ’n skool wat ruim geleenthede skep, groei Nico Malan Tennis steeds sterker — met ’n toekoms wat net beter lyk.

Swimming

Swimming is an official school sport at Nico Malan High School. The sport is facilitated by the school, with coaching provided by an external coach.

Training Schedule

  • Team training takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays.
  • Beginner swimmers are welcome to attend lessons on Friday afternoons.

Swimmers who are competent enough to compete in B-League galas are registered under the school’s name and typically practise on Saturdays in Gqeberha.

Inter-house Gala

Our annual inter-house swimming gala is enthusiastically supported and highly competitive. It usually takes place in February.

Chess

Chess as a school sport continues to grow and thrive at Nico Malan High School. Our learners proudly represent the school at both provincial and national level.

Coaching

We make use of the expertise and experience of Mr Keith Abercrombie, who coaches learners every Monday afternoon throughout the year.

League Participation

Nico Malan forms part of the Sarah Baartman Chess League, with league matches taking place on Wednesday afternoons during the winter months.
