Nico Malan Photography Club
The Nico Malan Photography Club was founded in 2010. The club attempts to bring together all students in the school who have an interest in photography. Any student that owns a camera or even a cellular phone with a camera is welcome to join. We currently have about more than 30 members ranging from Grade 8 to 12 including some members of the staff. Some members have only recently started taking an interest in photography while others have already made the move to DSLR cameras. Any student of Nico Malan High School is welcome to join the club and attend the classes/meetings.
There are currently two meetings per week. Beginners and novices gather on Tuesday afternoons from 14h00 to 15h00 and more advanced classes are done on Wednesday afternoons from 14h00 to 15h00. The club gathers in Mr. van Kampen's computer lab (B4).
The club attempts to teach members how to:
- critique a photograph on aesthetic as well as technical points.
- discuss and critique photographs taken by fellow students.
- improve photography through composition, camera use, etc.
- use new skills and ways to make photographs.
- understand the inner working of a camera and the history of photography.
- use photograph manipulation programs such as GIMP and Photoshop.
During the year the club will be hosting challenges to its members. The top 12 images as voted for by the members will feature in a calender for the next year. There are also plans to hold photo walks in the area where students can show off their new skills.
